Took a little longer than we thought, but Aloha Beach Camp's 2012 summer camp enrollment form is online now. That means we're already taking registrations for this summer! The price is $88 per day (which includes a $63 fee for camp and $25 for transportation) until March 25, when the Early Bird discount expires. Sign up now while you can still save money!

How to Learn to Surf

Like I always say, you're never too young to learn to surf. This little guy is only 4!

Like everyone at Aloha Beach Camp, our counselors taught this camp how to surf initially on the sand, then when he was ready (just a few minutes later), he was in the ocean surfing the waves all the way to the shore.

Private Surfing Lessons at Summer Camp

Sometimes folks don't believe us when we say ever camper gets personalize, 1-on-1 surfing instruction at Aloha Beach Camp. But it's true.

True, it's uncommon for kids to get 1-on-1 surfing lessons at summer camp. You'd generally need to sign up for private surfing lessons for that. But we think this is the best way to learn to surf, so when your child signs up for camp with us, private surfing lessons is what they'll get!

More than Just a Surf Camp

When you think of Aloha Beach Camp, you might think of a summer surf camp. But there's so much more than surfing here! We play lots of beach games and do lots of other fun stuff, too. (As you can see, the girls pictured above are flexing their muscles before taking each other on in a smash ball match!)

In fact there's just as many activities to enjoy on the sand as in the water. The smash ball equipment, frisbees, footballs, soccer balls, and many other sand toys are kept in easily accessible carrying cases on the sand right next to our canopies, so any time a camper wants to play a beach game, the toys and equipment are available for their enjoyment.

It's safe and fun. Campers kayak inside a calm marina with no waves. They get safety instruction before entering the water and wear lifevests. Counselors kayak too right next to the kids. It's so easy, there's virtually no learning curve.

Can't believe it's almost time to start preparing for summer camp 2012. Going through some old photos today to update the website, and came across these from a few years ago. These pictures were used on our AlohaBeachCamp.com website in 2008 (four years ago).

Some of these photos are still pretty good so maybe we'll find use for them again this year.

Teaching a Nervous Camper to Surf

Sometimes campers are hesitant to try new activities. Totally cool! Aloha Beach Camp's philosophy is to encourage participation, but never force campers to do anything they're not comfortable with. Kids should take their own time and only engage in camp activities when they feel ready.

One way we encourage kids to feel more comfortable is by easing them into the participation process. Take surfing for example. Campers start out with a surfing lesson on the sand, but many kids are easily intimidated by the surfboard itself, let alone the ocean. So rather than using an actual surfboard, campers can learn to surf on their beach towels instead, gradually moving onto the board and into the ocean at their own pace.

Worried about too much sun at beach camp?

Sometimes parents get concerned their kids might get too much sun exposure at beach camp. Trust me, you shouldn't worry yourself unnecessarily. The girl in the photo below attended Aloha Beach Camp last summer and never even turned pink! It goes without saying if she didn't get burned, your child probably won't either! :)

A mom called us today expressing concern her son didn't know how to surf, so maybe our program wasn't for him. To the contrary! When Will the 2012 Activity Schedule Be Posted?

We're working on the schedules now for next summer's camps and hope to have a tentative schedule available in the next month or two. We anticipate the 2012 schedule being similar to those in prior years. Here's a sample daily schedule for all three of our programs so you can get a decent idea of what takes place when and where they happen. (Remember, even though we do our best to stick to the posted schedules, they're never set in stone since we make activity and location changes throughout each summer to accommodate camper interests, ocean and weather conditions, etc.)

What Will Aloha Beach Camp Look Like Next Summer?

We're always trying to upgrade the camp. Fall is when we review what worked and what didn't from the summer just ended, then make plans and improvements so the following summer is even better.

Our guess right now is that we'll have a number of summer camp options for you to choose from next year. The day camps at Zuma, Paradise Cove and Castaic Lake will be available to you. You will also be able to choose from overnight programs in Hawaii (probably Maui and/or Oahu) as we expand into the sleepaway camp arena. (In fact we may even offer a sleepaway component so even local kids can join up; we may strike a deal with Pepperdine or another local university to use their dorms as our camp's sleeping and eating quarters while going to the beach during the day, who knows?)

Another thing we have planned are kids fishing trip excursions and perhaps ski and snowboarding trips this winter, as well as Castaic Lake Overnight excursions on the weekend next summer.

As you can see, many exciting things are happening at Aloha Beach Camp, so please visit the blog (and website) often to see all the latest news.

Many Low Income Youth Enjoyed Aloha Beach Camp This Summer

This summer we hosted, free of charge, approximately 40 or 50 low income/inner city youth from various Los Angeles area schools. We taught them how to surf and boogie board at Zuma Beach and helped them make new friends within our camp community.

We are looking forward to expanding this program next summer, with the goal of providing a totally free beach camp experience to at least 200 low income campers in 2012.

Why Do We Change Activities and Locations?

From time to time, and sometimes more frequently, we may make activity and/or and program location changes to the existing/pre-planned daily camp schedules. Sometimes we'll give you advance notice of such changes, other times they happen on the fly or last minute.

These changes may happen for any number of reasons, for example, campers may request more of one beach location and less of another, or want us to add activities that weren't on the original activity schedule, or maybe they desire more variety to the camp program, etc.

For example, here's just a partial listing of some of the activity location changes we made either last summer or over the course of the past several years:

Keiki Camp went to Paradise Cove instead of Zuma Beach on scheduled Zuma Beach Days
Keiki camp went to Zuma Beach instead of Paradise Cove, which was the originally intended location
High Action and Kahuna Camps went to the beach in Oxnard, Camarillo and/or Ventura instead of pre-planned Zuma
High Action and Kahuna Camps went fishing at the Santa Monica pier even though Zuma and Castaic Lake were on the schedule
All three camps went to the park on rainy days instead of the beach
All three camps attended Paradise Cove or another beach instead of Zuma Beach, which was the originally intended location
Our Farewell Cruise, originally scheduled to set sail from a chartered boat in the Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, instead set sail from the Hornblower Yacht in Marina del Rey

As indicated in our Family Handbook and Registration Information, these types of changes are a regular part of camp life and cannot always be predicted beforehand. Of course, we will always do our best to give you advance notice if any such changes become necessary.

Especially on days where you may need to pick up your child from camp or at a different bus stop from their normal transportation schedule, please call us ahead of time for directions and to confirm our location. If we've needed to make a last-minute scheduling change that day, we don’t want to worry, surprise, or inconvenience you, so it's always better to call ahead just to be on the safe side :)

New Camps and Programs Coming Next Year

Camp's over for this summer but we're already planning for next year. We've got two new activities and programs on the slate every camper will love. First, we'll offering an overnight surf camp component in Hawaii. And then, locally, we are adding parasailing as part of our day camp program. Gonna be fun!

Exciting news for sure, it looks like we're gonna add at least one, and possibly two, OVERNIGHT camp components to our Los Angeles Summer Camp day camp program in Malibu. We're looking at a Maui or Honolulu overnight program and/or an LA Summer Camp overnight camp based perhaps at Pepperdine University in Malibu. By doing this, kids from all over the WORLD will be able to enjoy the Aloha Beach Camp experience. Should be fun!

Many folks have been asking about next year and how and when to register for camp, how much it will cost, and so on. We anticipate opening up enrollment for next summer's Aloha Beach Camp program in late fall / early winter, but we will definitely keep you posted. We want to make the program as affordable as possible for everyone, so if we can offer lower rates next summer (the same way we lowered them this year compared to last) we'll surely do so.

Keiki Camp Camper-to-Staff Ratios

Sometimes folks get anxious thinking about sending their kids to camp around water, especially young ones who many not have lots of aquatic experience yet. Please don't worry! :) At our Keiki Camp program your child will be supervised by experience counselors who are also lifeguards. We also maintain a safe and low 3:1 ratio so your camper is NEVER out of arm's reach (or close supervision) from our staff.

What if We Need Bus Service From 2 Locations?

Transportation is available throughout Los Angeles for all campers. You can meet the bus at a meeting point near your home or office. Practically 100% of our kids take the bus to and from camp, mostly because their parents don't have the time or resources to drive their kids to the beach themselves. (The kids who don't take the bus usually live in Malibu and either: 1) walk to camp, or 2) live a quick car ride away. But even they take the bus for the most part. Please remember that your daily prices includes two charges, one for camp and one for bus service from ONE morning and afternoon location. ON THE SAME BUS. If you need transportation from a second location, this can be provided for $30 per day.

Is Transportation Included in the Daily Price for Camp?

Your daily price includes 1) transportation fees, and 2) beach camp itself. These are two separate charges. The general fee breakdown for transportation (depending on where you live and other factors) is approximately 30% - 40% of your daily price. Please remember you may choose ONE morning and ONE afternoon meeting point. If you need transportation from an additional location, this can be provided for an additional fee of $30 per day.

How Much Does Transportation Cost?

When you sign up for Aloha Beach Camp you can pick one bus stop in the morning and one in the afternoon. But so far this summer many people are asking for extra bus stops, to switch buses, to go home on a different bus with their friends after camp and all that. When you sign up for camp you're paying one price for day camp and one for transportation. Please remember that your transportation fees allow you to be picked up and dropped off AT ONE BUS STOP IN THE MORNING AND THE SAME BUS STOP IN THE AFTERNOON. If you need pick up and drop off service on an additional bus or at a second meeting point, this can provided for $15 per am stop and $15 for pm stop.

You probably already know you can sign up for camp day-by-day whenever you want with no fixed sessions to conform to. Now you can sign up for camp whenever you want with only minimal advance notice required, and you simply "Pay As You Go" only for the days of camp you use!

Imagine it's a random Tuesday night during the summer. Your son or daughter wants to go to camp the next day. Simply shoot us an email or give us a call to let us know. As long as we have room for you, you're in, and we won't even charge your credit card until AFTER your child gets on the bus for camp that morning!

I'd say more than 99% of the kids attending Aloha Beach Camp ride the bus to and from camp. But if you want to drive your child yourself, no problem, just make sure to check in with us each morning and out each afternoon before taking your child home. If you are driving your camper yourself please arrive at camp by 9:40 am and 2:30 pm each afternoon.

Is there a Name Your Own Price Option for the Daily Rate?

You probably already know we offer a "name your own price for summer camp" option for an Aloha Beach Camp Season Pass. But a few people have asked recently if we also have one just for the daily rate.

In general, we don't discount the daily rate too much because the cost of running the camp is EXTREMELY high and the value you'll get for the price is more than worth it. But, we area VERY sensitive to the high cost of raising kids and sending them to camp!

Closer and Closer to the Start of Summer Camp

It's already June 1 -- the month most summer camps start here in Los Angeles and all across America. If you're not already signed up for camp, now's the time. Used to be camps sold out early in the year...February or March maybe. But with today's economy folks are waiting longer, typically till May and June, to register. That means this month could be very competitive from a camp enrollment standpoint. No matter which camp you choose this summer, sign up for camp today!

What's the Best Kind of Surfboard for Kids?

In our experience teaching surfing lessons at summer camp, the bigger the surfboard, the better. Longer, wider boards are easier to learn on because kids find their balance on them much easier. (These boards are more difficult to maneuverer and turn, but when you're starting out that's no issue. As kids progress over time, they can use use short, thinner surfboards to improve their skills. We generally use 7.5 or 8 foot soft-top surfboards at Aloha Beach Camp.

You bet! Even though we generally advertise 14 or 15 as the upper-age limit, many 16 year-old campers attend Aloha Beach Camp too. Just this morning two moms with 16 year old boys and girls asked if their kids could come to summer camp this year. As we always say, you're never too old to outgrow the beach! :)

Open House Parking Update

Hope to see you at this Saturday's summer camp Open House. Wanted to give you a quick parking update.

If you're coming to our Paradise Cove open house, parking costs $25 or $3 for 4 hours with a restaurant validation. (Got this information from the Paradise Cove Website.) We suggest having lunch at the adjacent cafe so you can get a validation.

If you are coming to our Zuma Beach open house, you can either pay to park in the Zuma lot (which I THINK is $7), or you can park on PCH (if space is available in a safe spot) near Lifeguard Tower 6 (close to the Zuma lifeguard headquarters tower) and walk down to the beach. Look for for black and white Billabong canopies to find us.

Many parents who have not planned summer activities for their kids are beginning to panic. If you're one of the many parents who's put off signing up your kids for summer camp, you might want to contact the camp director to see what's available. As long as you’re flexible and open to working within the camp’s availability guidelines (for example, agreeing to a Monday, Wednesday and Friday schedule even though your first choice is Monday, Tuesday and Thursday), you can probably still get into the camp of your choice. But you might not want to wait much longer! :)

Take Your Camp for a Test Drive Before Summer Starts

Many people sign up for summer camp sight-unseen. The problem with this approach is you don't know what you're getting. The camp might not be as safe as you hoped. The counselors might not be as qualified. And facilities might not be maintained. You wouldn’t buy a car without a test drive, so don't sign up for camp without a test-drive, either. We suggest attending an open house to meet the director ahead of time, and/or take a tour of the camp facilities before summer starts.

L.A. Summer Camp Open House

We've finally got Aloha Beach Camp's next open house details squared away. If you live in Los Angeles and you're looking for a summer beach or surf camp, join us Saturday, May 14 in Malibu to learn about Aloha camp program and meet us in person.

Usually Aloha Beach Camp open houses take place at public parks, but on May 14, we're having one on the beach where camp takes place in Malibu.

Keiki Camp Open House

For families interested in the Keiki Camp, your open house takes place at Paradise Cove beach from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. After you park, please look for the black and white Billabong canopies adjacent to the lifeguard tower to the right of the restaurant on the sand.

PARKING NOTE: Per the Paradise Cove website, there is a parking fee of $3 for 4 hours with a restaurant validation, and $25 after that, so why not make a day of it and have lunch in the restaurant while you're there for the open house? :)

Kahuna Camp and High Action Camp Open House

If you are planning on attending the Kahuna Camp or High Action Camp summer camps, your open house will take place at Zuma Beach, Lifeguard Tower # 6, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. You can park in the Zuma lot (which last time we checked costs $7), or find a spot on Pacific Coast Highway (where safe to do so) and park for free, then walk down to the beach to join us.

Please look for the black and white Billabong canopies at Lifeguard Tower 6, a couple hundred yards north of the Zuma Beach Lifeguard Headquarters building.

From time-to-time we provide lunch for our campers at the beach, and we also provide a snack every afternoon before going home. Generally such snacks are comprised of Goldfish, graham crackers, pretzels and the like. We want to make sure your camper stays healthy and satisfied, so if your child has dietary restrictions, it's no problem at all. Just let us know a few days in advance so we can make sure your child gets the snack they need according to your instructions.

Availability Update

We get lots of phone calls and emails this time of year as you can imagine. One of the most common questions we get is, "Did I wait to long to sign up for camp? What's your availability? How much space do you have left?"

It's almost May, so naturally parents are concerned Aloha Beach Camp might already be sold out. We're filling up, but we're not there yet. If you want to get your first choice of days, though, you won't want to wait too much longer to register for camp.

For Summer Camps, Every Day is Earth Day

Happy Earth Day Everyone! Even tough today marks the official "Earth Day" celebration, for summer camps and summer camp operators, every day is Earth Day.

One of the standard definitions of a summer camp is the program and activities take place outdoors. Therefore, camp directors are keenly aware and strive to impart upon kids the potential impact their programs, activities, and actions can have on the environment. And that's why, as you contemplate camp opportunities for your kids this year, we hope you'll choose a camp that practices "Leave no Trace" principles and ethics and imparts these to its campers.

According to Wikipedia, Leave No Trace "is a national and international program designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with their decisions about how to reduce their impacts when they hike, camp, picnic, snowshoe, run, bike, hunt, paddle, ride horses, fish, ski or climb."

For kids at camp, this means properly disposing of trash and waste, recycling bottles and cans, minimizing the impact of campfires, respecting wildlife, and leaving nature in its place.

Is a Beach Camp really a "Camp" After All?

When you think of summer camp in the traditional sense, you probably think of bunk beds, horseback riding, skits around the campfire and a camp director wandering the premises with clipboard in hand. In other words, summer camp at the beach may not jump into your head as a camp in the truest sense.

But even though Aloha Beach Camp is untraditional, it's important to realize our aquatic program concept comprises every bit the camp experience kids would get if they went to a traditional camp, too. In fact the same could be said of a cooking camp, boot camp, cross-country-running camp, computer camp, snowboarding camp, you name it. Why? Because where the camp takes place doesn't matter, only what happens there does.

The only thing that matters is whether the kids who attend the camp come away with positive outcomes. After attending the program, you (and the camp director) want to be sure your camper comes away with many new friends, skills, self-confidence, esteem, and the desire to return to the camp again next year.

If your child feels this way after attending summer camp -- despite where the camp takes place -- that camp should be a called winner in your book.

Yes! Everybody surfs at Aloha Beach Camp. Surfing is safe and fun for kids of all ages. And it's instructional, too. The younger kids surf on Wednesdays while the older kids visit Castaic Lake.
